I have to say it

I have a hard time watching people tell other people about Jesus in like a minute (assuming the person hearing has never heard of Jesus) and then expect them to make a life decision.

It usually goes like:
Does your life suck? Well it sucks because you were meant for Jesus and since you don't know him it sucks. On top of which you need him because your sins separate you from God and the only way to be back with God is to believe Jesus.

If I was listening I would ask:
Why do you think my life sucks? Who is Jesus? Where is he? What are sins? Why did they separate me from God? When did that happen? I don't remember God being there and then God being gone? I just have to believe Jesus, believe what about Jesus? That he exist? That's all?

I'm not trying to criticize (though I know I am doing that very thing). I just struggle watching people do this. They assume certain terms and phrases should be simply understood. Culturally people know nothing about Jesus. If I knew Jesus from the culture around me I would know very little about him. A matter of fact I would basically know that Jesus hates Muslims, gays, and liberals. Oh and of course people who have an abortion. If I only knew Jesus from sitting in most churches I would know that Jesus did good things, forgives people for bad things, died and is in heaven.

What life decision does this information tell me I need to make?

I feel like people are often not informed and then are expected to make a decision. And then, this is the part that gets me, they are left alone. Regardless if they made a choice or not, they are left alone to figure out all the details. What are their chances?

I mean I full heartedly believe we need to evangelize the nations. I believe in the Great Commission. But I just wonder sometimes about the people who are falling through the cracks. It is heart breaking, and sometimes I want to say it's not their fault (though I know it is).

Just something to think about

Interesting....not sure how I feel about door-to-door right now, but as of now I think its better than nothing....but I am still thinking. It is similar to Paul speaking in the market place. Since we would be "disturbing the peace" by preaching in a grocery store, going door-to-door doesn't seem much different.

It's not to say that door-to-door is bad. Some people are saved this way... it's just what we say and how we act and how we treat the people at the door.

Do we treat them as if they only knew then they would believe?

Do we treat them as if they already know?

How we treat them is important

Hey man, I agree to a point what your saying, but a lot of the time, people can't or Won't be converted, because we as Christians have to remember that not everyone can be converted, but if you force it down their throats they defiantly wont be converted, so we all need to remember, that some have their own beliefs, for example I don't go to church/temple/mass because of my beliefs, and to walk blindly is worse then not believing at all. just a little food for thought, and I want to say that I enjoyed your blog, and post

I agree with bazooka knight. It must be done diplomatically ease. Let them feel good about it. For me, this important knowledge should be taught properly right since childhood because we all know that it’s really hard to teach a new trick to an old dog. Learn from young!

Whats up with the homoerotic Jesus pic?

I'm gay and struggling with whether or not Christ's love will find me. I came to terms with my sexual identity only recently (I'm just 19) and it was driven a chasm in between the conservative religious tradition I was raised with. Any wisdom coming from here?

Conflicted- We have much wisdom to share. especially with a hot young 19 year old. As a man, you cant have both Jesus and throbbing cock. You must choose. Although Jesus never really made his points on homosexuality clear, I mean, he could have been gay himself, your conservative overseers have made their points explicitly clear; you may not have sex with another man unless you do it in an airport bathroom.

When door to door works, it is probably because the person behind the door's own life has already told them that it sucks. In other words, they are already in crisis, even if it is not visible.

I like the way the Twelve Traditions of AA puts it "Our public relations program is based on attraction rather than promotion.

For me, I share the best when I have an opportunity to share what God has done in me and why He is so real to me. It is in those very real and spontaneous moments that I feel that I can relate much better to the person I am talking to because it comes up in conversation.

Good post. I just realized that I was also doing the very thing. Not the door to door thing but, when I share what I know about Jesus. I'm just sixteen and I think I'm lost.

Hope someone besides myself can help me.
