One thing that I think the church often doesn’t do is celebrate God, this is myself included. We have worship on Sundays, which is good. But how often does worship seem like obligation rather than celebration. Now don’t get me wrong. There is a side of obligation where we owe God worship because he is worthy regardless of how we feel. But God is so awesome he should be celebrated!
This has really hit me hard recently. Since moving to Texas I have heard more conversation about sports than God…. and I attend a seminary! Now that might be a slight exaggeration but sport (particularly football) certainly competes with God. You know there have been several times in church where you’ll hear an amen or two… but if you mention football you’ll get the loudest amens.
And I am not trying to pick on sports fans either! Let’s talk about gamers for a second. How many people will yell and make some noise and get excited about the new Call Of Duty or the newest Assassin’s Creed?
Or even worse yet! How many people pay more attention texting than listening to the Scriptures? You’ll have kids who can text full paragraphs (sometimes in text speak but not always) without looking just by remembering the rhythm of the buttons? Can these kids remember the 10 commandments? I’m not even talking about remembering them in the proper order but can these kids write out all 10?
Is God not as exciting as football? Is God not as exciting as video games? Texting?
One thing I use to do to get excited about God, as some of my brothers will remember, was to give God a toast. Some of my friends and I (the believing friends of course) would give toasts to go regularly. We also develop it into where we’d give a toast to God and go around saying one awesome thing about God! It was awesome.
Since getting married I’ve done a few toasts with my wife but we pray regularly, which is what we should be doing. Don’t get me wrong praying is vastly more significant and valuable than toasting.
However I wonder if I should start toasting again also. : - )
Well if you are reading this and you like challenges then I will call you out. Give God a serious toast every day for a week (just one week) and see how it makes you feel.
Thanks!
Peace

Numbers 28:7
We will start toasting again...in addition to praying!
